What Happened to Denise from Full House

I will always hold Lovecraft so dear to my heart — the opportunity to work with such phenomenal artists like Jonathan [Majors] and Misha and Michael and Aunjanue [Ellis] and Wunmi [Mosaku] and Courtney [B. The opportunity to bring that story to life — it was a real privilege to play Leti Fuckin’ Lewis. I’ve been in it long enough to know not to have expectations with anything. It’s a project that will continue beyond those moments. It’ll continue to do the work, and while, of course, I would’ve loved to continue with it, those are things that aren’t up to us as artists, and you can’t get too attached to the results.

Does this show feel integral to the current conversation about diversity in Hollywood?

Well silly me, I thought that one of those houses was the Tanner house even though none of them looked like it. So I went to Alamo Square and took a picture thinking I was in the right spot. We Grown Now, starring Jurnee Smollett, S. Epatha Merkerson, Blake Cameron James, Gian Ramirez and Lil Rel Howery is now in theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, with nationwide expansion coming soon. Howery echoed Smollett’s sentiment about the necessity of shining a light on stories about Black boyhood. Similarly, Chicago native Lil Rel Howery says joining the cast of We Grown Now was a no-brainer and the perfect opportunity to pay homage to the city that raised him as he recalls once being in the shoes of the character, Eric, whom he plays a father to.

What did you have to do to get the role?

So maybe if the museum opens up we will be able to see those. In Fuller House, D.J. Tanner-Fuller, Danny Tanner’s eldest daughter, moves back home with her three children after the untimely death of her husband, Tommy. When Danny, played by Bob Saget, has to move away for work, his daughter Stephanie moves in with D.J. To help her out with the kids, alongside D.J.’s best friend Kimmy. On "True Blood," Smollett's character Nicole was a vampire-rights activist, which allowed her to tap into some of her own personal experiences as a lifelong activist who openly advocates for various human rights issues.

As someone who grew up on TV, have you noticed that the roles have gotten better?

Truly, one of the great joys of my professional career has been playing Black Canary and to see the response from the fans online and engaging on Twitter. They are a massive reason why I am where I am, and any excitement I have about continuing on the Black Canary trajectory, it’s being made possible because of the fans. Then, when I met with Joseph Kosinski, we had a Zoom, and I was honest with him about my thoughts and things that I would want to do to flesh out Lizzy and bring her to life. The session essentially became a brainstorming meeting, and after that Zoom, I was like, “I wanna work with Joe.” I really bought into his vision of the film and his spirit of collaboration.

The real ‘Full House’ house in San Francisco and where to find it

The house on Broderick Street was out of the media limelight from 1995, when Full House ended, until 2016, when Fuller House started airing. It was always a popular tourist attraction, but once the Netflix reboot hit the screens, even more fans started flocking to see the house – to the despair of the neighbors. And children don’t always understand the toll that takes on you and it’s not their job to understand that. But when you come in, and you just put your bags down, and they want to talk, or they want to play, or they want you to make them some food and the stamina that requires, you know, I really relate related to that. I was aware of that existing in my grandmother, who worked, you know, from sunup until sundown cooking for families so much, she couldn’t really cook for her own kids and would miss dinner time and come home at 8 o’clock most nights.

She was boss from the beginning.” When she took her talent to the next level with Full House, it was only a matter of time before the rest followed suit. Life in the Full House wasn’t that much different from her reality since she is the fourth of six, with all her siblings involved in some form of art. In fact, her brother, Jussie Smollett told the New York Times that they refer to themselves as the "Smoll Nation" because — in Jurnee's own words — they have their very "own culture." The series, which premiered in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, did not end up being picked up for a second season, despite racking up nearly 20 Emmy nominations for its first season and becoming an instant cult classic. As a preteen, Jurnee Smollett starred in "Cosby," alongside the now decried Bill Cosby and Debbie Allen's sister, Phylicia Rashad.

Our history is just so rich and there's so much story here to tell. Truth is stranger than fiction with this era. The things that really took place are shocking. I read slave narratives and, just in reading their words, you realize what life was like for them.

Smollett co-starred with actors Bow Wow and Brandon T Jackson in the 2005 skater movie Roll Bounce. In 2006, she joined the film Gridiron Gang. In 2007 actor/director Denzel Washington cast Smollett in his starring/directorial vehicle The Great Debaters. The film was produced by Oprah Winfrey and Harvey Weinstein. Actor Jurnee Smollett has been gracing our TV screens since she was a tiny child star, and now she's grown into a bonafide celebrity. Smollett has been appearing on TV with her big smile and head full of curls for as long as most of us can remember, but we have to be honest...

The role that raised the bar

But, at the end of the day, it's an honor and a privilege to be able to bring a voice to their stories. The actress tells The Hollywood Reporter about working with director Joseph Kosinski to give her character "guilt and shame," and recalls Samuel L. Jackson's unique advice about her DC superhero. Now that I know I was in the wrong spot I will be sure to make it to the correct house the next time I’m in San Francisco. If you want to visit the house that was used for the exterior shots of the Tanner family home you will need to go to 1709 Broderick Street. Did you know that Jeff Franklin, the creator of Full and Fuller House, purchased the house?

In the pilot, [that strength] comes out in the moment where she has to protect her brother, but it's a strength that is brewing inside of her that will take her far—especially in the first season. She eventually becomes someone she never thought she could be. And I just felt like I also understood her loneliness and the fact that she doesn't fit in anywhere on the plantation. She feels like an outsider and envies the field hands, because at least they have some kind of camaraderie, some sense of unity, some sense of family. We shot this in the middle of 2020 and the COVID pandemic. It was one of the first films that Netflix put back into production.

Because if we do not take care of ourselves, we’re not able to be present. We’re not able to enjoy our time with them. So with Dolores, that was a concept we honed in on. I have an amazing village of strong women who work and raise babies and try to do the impossible of pursuing what you love without neglecting those you love. I watched my mom raise six kids as a single Black mom. And I remember the craft services was really good.

But the show brought a lot of new experiences for Smollett too — namely stunts. Smollett’s been in the game for over three decades and she chooses her roles with intention. As a biracial child who grew up in the South, she understands the power of storytelling, specifically as it relates to the African American experience. Ironically, Smollett recently revealed that the casting crew was not looking for an actor of color for the coveted role.

Because of the opening credits, where the family is seen driving around San Francisco and then stopping for a picnic, many believed that the house is one of the infamous Painted Ladies, one of the city’s most photographed tourist destinations. Saget’s character, with his caring, gentle nature and bottomless sac of good advice stood as an adoptive father figure to ’90s kids all around the world, myself included. The whole world cried in shock when beloved actor and comedian Bob Saget passed away unexpectedly in early 2022. That made me emotional because watching it made me think about my friends. I had genuine friendships in the 90s, right before we almost had to grow up a little quicker than we wanted to.

While some remember her from her days in the show, most of us met Jurnee in other shows and loved her just as much. From 2009 to 2011, Jurnee Smollett starred as a series regular on the popular television show "Friday Night Lights." She was a full-fledged adult by then, and had changed her look quite a bit. She wore her famous curls looser and often tried out bolder makeup applications, further separating herself from her child star image.

You just keep your head down, and you do the work. But I feel like I grew so much as an artist. I was so challenged by the work, in such the most beautiful way. Rest in peace, Michael, who I just love and adore, and my heart is so broken about. I love my Lovecraft Country family, and we’re all still so close. And I think those memories that we created together, we’ll always hold onto it.

While she was in high school in the early oughties, Smollett didn't take on as many big acting roles. That's right, that's a tiny Jurnee Smollett in one of her first on-screen appearances back in 1991. The future star, who spent her childhood in New York City and Los Angeles with her five siblings, made her TV debut in the pilot episode of the ill-fated series "Sunday in Paris," starring the legendary actor and dancer Debbie Allen.
